HOPKINTON, MA –October 2, 2019 – Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton was thrilled to be awarded a Maddie’s Fund® grant to participate in the organization’s Dog Foster Apprenticeship program. Thanks to this generous grant from Maddie’s Fund and the Pima Animal Care Center, Baypath’s foster coordinator will have an opportunity to spend four days working with the team at Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, Arizona, discovering new ways to:

Promote foster pets
Build on its foster-centric culture
Recruit and retain foster families
Expand its support system in the community

When you foster a dog from a shelter, you are actually saving two animals because you’re saving that animal, and allowing that kennel space to be open to another animal. Fostering empowers Baypath Humane Society to not only rescue more animals in need but provide special care that often isn’t possible in a shelter setting.

“We’re fortunate to be part of an animal welfare community that shares their successes and best practices to help others,” said Executive Director Elizabeth Jefferis. “We’ve learned so much from Maddie’s Fund programs already, and are eager to have the chance to gain hands-on experience working with Pima Animal Care Center through the Maddie’s Fund Dog Apprenticeship program. This opportunity will help us to grow and support our incredible network of foster families and to explore new ways to find loving homes for tougher-to-adopt dogs.”

Maddie's Fund is a national family foundation established by Dave and Cheryl Duffield to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals. In 2017, Pima Animal Care Center received a grant from Maddie’s Fund to build the world’s largest, most innovative foster program. Just one year later, Pima Animal Care Center placed 5,080 pets in foster homes. Since then, the two organizations created an apprenticeship program to teach other animal rescues how to increase the capacity of their existing foster programs. Through the program, Pima has welcomed 60 apprentices from shelters cross the country to learn about starting and running model foster programs.
