Everyone Fits in The Big Tent

By contributor,

Are those baby creatures in utero? With talon-like legs? Drawn in walnut ink on ancient ledger pages? (Agnes Wyant) Is that a collage of several photos of the architectural invention that is MIT’s Stata Center? Or do these buildings really look like this? (Richard Tranfallia) Why would the young girl in the charcoal portrait be smiling so shyly, eyes downcast, hands at her neck? (Grace Liu)

The Big Tent may not answer these questions, but it holds these questions, and it invites its viewers to experience these questions.

The annual far-ranging showcase of member artists of the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, The Big Tent attracts artists young and old, professional and inspired amateur, and is selected and organized by HCA director Kris Waldman. “I’m once again struck by the variety and vitality of the work,” Waldman says, “from a 16-year-old’s self-portrait to a 73-year-old’s imaginings of lives lived 100 years ago.”

The Big Tent is on view from December 10 through January 17 in HCA’s Lotvin Family Gallery. A free reception for the artists and the public will be held at the gallery on Sunday, January 13 from 1:30 to 3pm.
