Hopkinton High School drama students will present the musical “Godspell” November 15-18 in the HHS auditorium.

“Godspell” features parables from the Bible and music by legendary composer Stephen Schwartz. It debuted off-Broadway in 1971 and has enjoyed several popular revivals since then. HHS’s version features Matthew Dempsey as Jesus; Abbey Kelly-Lanser as the Baptist/Betrayer; and 40 other talented students.

While the play is more than 40 years old, its message is timely, says director Valerie vonRosenvinge. “Godspell is about disparate groups of people being brought together to form a community by a teacher who reminds them of their commonality and refocuses their attention towards kindness, tolerance, and compassion,” vonRosenvinge says. “If we, as human beings, could focus on what we have in common as opposed to what makes us different, we could work together to create a better world for everyone. That is the message that the teacher, Jesus, shares with the feuding factions he brings together over the course of the play.

“The HHS Drama Ensemble believes that this is a message worth exploring. We hope you will join us!,” she adds.

Show times are Thursday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 18, at 3 p.m. All shows are in the HHS auditorium at 90 Hayden Rowe Street. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults and can be purchased at the door or in advance at Hopkinton High School.
