Hopkinton will celebrate the ribbon cutting for the new Marathon Elementary School on Saturday, June 9th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The school will open for the 2018-2019 school year, serving Hopkinton’s kindergarten and 1st grade as well as the public pre-K program.

“This will be a community wide celebration,” said Joe Markey, Chairman of Hopkinton’s Elementary School Building Committee. “Strong civic engagement has defined this project, and the result is a school that not only achieves the core educational mission, but also integrates and reflects Hopkinton’s unique heritage. We’re excited to share the outcome of this significant public effort.”

The event will feature participation from community and school groups, including the Hopkinton Boy Scouts, Hopkinton Girl Scouts, Hopkinton High School Unite volunteers, and the Hopkinton High School band. After comments by local and state leaders, the school doors will open for the public to experience the school first hand.

Inspired by Hopkinton's significance as the starting point for the Boston Marathon, the school's name also celebrates Hopkinton’s sister city relationship with Marathon, Greece. The Consul General of Greece in Boston, Stratos Efthymiou, and the CEO of Boston Athletic Association, Tom Grilk, have confirmed their participation in the event. Tim Kilduff, 26.2 Foundation Executive Director commented, “I’m not aware of any school project in the country or the world that so well reflects the Spirit of the Marathon as this school.”
