The Principal Planner performs highly technical professional and administration within the Town's Land
Use Department. The work involves preparing planning studies; serving as professional staff to the
Planning Board; assessing proposals for land use and development; determining compliance with Zoning
Bylaws, and applicable state and federal laws; planning long range projects; acquiring and administering
grants; and recommending policies, standards or criteria.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet the following to be considered qualified for this position:
Education, Training and Experience
Equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or related and One (1) to Three (3) years of
experience as a municipal or environmental planner. Master’s Degree Preferred.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws governing planning related work including Mass General Laws,
Chapters 40A (Zoning Act); 40B, Sec. 20-23 (Anti-Snob Zoning Law); 41 (Subdivision Control Law); 131,
Section 40 (Wetlands Protection Act); 61, 61A and 61B; State Affordable Housing programs, including the
Local Initiative Program, MGL, Ch. 30B (Procurement Act) and DEP Stormwater Regulations. Candidates
must also have the ability to develop programs and manage projects efficiently, read and interpret
blueprints, and have strong administrative, Geographic Information Systems, and computer skills and
ability to conduct independent research projects and interpret the results.
Required Licensing/Certification: A valid U.S. Driver’s License.
Hiring Salary Range: $75,732 - $98,446; Full Range to $106,017, depending on qualifications.
