Earlier today, the Transportation Safety Review Committee met to discuss an issue of concern to all parents and their students; i.e. student safety at bus stops. The Committee agreed to ask parents to remind their students to be extra careful at this time of the year due to darkness in the early mornings and late afternoons. If a student has to cross a street to get onto the school bus, the student should always wait for a signal from the bus driver before leaving the bus stop to board the bus. Bus drivers are trained to wait for all traffic to come to a complete stop before signaling to students. Similarly, if a student has to cross a street after getting off the school bus, the student should always wait for the driver to signal that it is safe for the student to cross. Obviously, these safety tips should be used regardless of the time of the year, but are extra important now that winter is almost here.
