HCA Artists Aged 5 to 12 Respond to the Van Gogh Painting The Starry Night
Through January 11, 2018 in the Lotvin Family Gallery
Hopkinton Center for the Arts, 98 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton, MA

What happens when you ask kids to look at a painting and then to make ones of their own? Everything.

Kris Waldman, co-director of the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, suggested that HCA’s art teachers show Van Gogh’s The Starry Night to their elementary school students and then request individual responses. Waldman thought that the 20 or so resulting works would make a fine show.

When the little wonders exploded with joyful output and 42 wonderful pieces appeared, more than would fit the space, what to do? “We took inspiration from the design of the Van Gogh,” Waldman says, “and arranged the paintings like wind-whipped clouds on a moonlit night.” As a result, the works swirl, converge, and zoom across the walls.

HCA Artists Aged 5 to 12 Respond to the Van Gogh Painting The Starry Night runs through January 11, 2018 at HCA’s newly named Lotvin Family Gallery. Lorelei and Alan Lotvin have given this wonderful gift to the community to express their family's kpassion for art making and deep commitment to enabling access to the arts for everyone.

A reception for the artists, their families, and the public will be held at the gallery on Sunday, December 17 from noon to 1pm. You are welcome to stay for Santa’s Holiday Workshop, from 1 - 4pm.

As plastered with an overabundance of work as it now is, HCA is showing but a tiny bit of what’s produced there. In 2017, over 1200 students hailing from 35 surrounding cities and towns have been trained in almost 200 arts classes.
